SEO Best Practices

When it comes to being seen on the internet today, one thing comes to everyone’s mind; Search Engine Optimization, more popularly referred to as SEO. The better a website’s SEO, the higher it’s going to rank on search engines like Google, Yahoo, or Bing to name a few examples. To increase a website’s Search Engine Optimization, there are many strategies and techniques that can help accomplish this. Mainly, there needs to be enough content and text on the website to target your wanted keywords, text headings should be utilized, and link to external websites, as well as, other pages on your site.

Content

Typically, for a page to have enough text to really make a difference on a website’s SEO score, there should be a minimum of 300 words. Now, it’s not as easy as stuffing text with keywords. This is where keyword/keyphrase density comes into play. Search engines are smart and will recognize if the percentage of text is filled with the keyword that you’re aiming for, and it will neglect the individual page in question if this is the case. Images can even be tailored for SEO as well with their alt-attributes. An alt-attribute is a hidden tag in the website that indicates the photo has relevance to the content of the page. Usually, the best practice is to give the image an alt-attribute that mirrors the URL for the page, or the main keyphrase.

Use Headings to Improve Search Engine Optimization

The first and one of the easier steps to a better SEO ranking is something we just did! By using headings such as h1, h2, h3, etc. search engines that scan your website will pick up on any words that have been put into a heading. This gives whatever keywords, phrases, or information that exist in a heading an additional boost in its search engine ranking. It’s a great idea to put information like the name of your business, the service you offer, or any keyword you would like to rank for the inside of a heading.

Keyword Research

This is one of the most important steps when it comes to SEO performance. When undergoing an SEO project here at the Computer Guild, we spend plenty of time and resources researching the organic competition. Seeing what other sites rank for, what keywords they use, and seeing if we are missing any helps us tailor our content to compete with the other highest-ranking websites in any given industry. Basically, finding out what keywords are naturally showing up will inform you of what additional keywords should be focused on.

External and Internal Links

Other websites have their own SEO scores, so take advantage by linking to them! When you include a link to another website, it boosts your SEO ranking by taking theirs into account as well. Another way to increase your SEO by linking is to include links to other pages on your own website. This gives each page another additional boost in search engines.
